Mexican Taco Turkey Burgers

Oops, I did it again. These Mexican taco turkey burgers are without any doubt the best savory recipe on this blog. And with 4th of July coming up next week, what is a better way to celebrate America than with Mexican taco turkey burgers?! Ha.

But really, these taco burgers will literally blow the socks off your guests at your celebratory BBQ. It’s Tom’s birthday so you better believe we will be celebrating by lighting up the grill and cooking some of these bad boys!

Now turkey burgers can get a bad rep for being too dry but these burgers don’t even come close to that. I made them for my parents a couple of weeks ago and my dad ate TWO burgers in one night. He said they were the best burgers he has had in a while. My mom is super picky about ground turkey or chicken because she doesn’t like how they can sometimes be dry, but she even commented about the juiciness of these.

One of my major suggestions for ensuring juiciness is to make sure you are buying turkey that isn’t 99% lean. Yes, I know it is less calories if you buy the lean stuff, but you are sacrificing majorly on flavor. I like to do a 93% lean because I find that that combo is the most flavorful.

The recipe for these burgers actually came about when I was at work one day and was getting tacos down at our cafeteria for Taco Tuesday. They have a station that is a make your own taco bar and I always turn mine into a big salad and as a protein option, they offered ground turkey this time. Normally, it is just chicken, tofu or steak so I decided to add the turkey as my protein. It was seasoned with taco flavors and it was so freaking good. Total party in my mouth. I knew I needed to recreate that turkey but this time in burger form.

Mexican Taco Turkey Burgers
Serves: 4 burgers
  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • ¼ tsp. garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp. onion powder
  • ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper flake
  • ¼ tsp. dried oregano
  • ½ tsp. paprika
  • 1½ tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 lb. ground turkey (or chicken)
  • 1 egg
  1. Combine dry ingredients to make seasoning
  2. Mix ground turkey, egg, and seasoning
  3. Form into patties (1/3-1/2 cup meat)
  4. Coat a large skillet with cooking spray.
  5. Cook the burgers over medium heat for about 5 minutes, or until browned.
  6. Flip the burgers and cook for 5 minutes longer, or until golden brown
  7. A thermometer should read 165F (the meat is no longer pink)
