A guide to healthy shopping for pantry staples and snacks at Walmart! I break down all of my favorite healthy foods at Walmart in this post!
Last week Tom and I were talking about how so many stores now are really trying to offer a variety of healthy products and it isnโt just big companies like Whole Foods who make getting healthy foods accessible. For someone like me, this is my dream.
When I first started my healthy eating journey, I basically had to shop at either Trader Joes or Whole Foods if I wanted to get any healthy product.
I specifically remember three years ago Tom and I going to the regular grocery store in his hometown because we had to get a gluten-free graham cracker as part of a dessert we were making for his gluten-free aunt, and there was literally nothing.
Not only did they not have no gluten-free graham crackers, but they didnโt even really have a gluten-free section. Now you can pop into any grocery store, not just your local TJโs, and find an entire section of gluten-free, dairy-free, and healthier alternative foods.
Itโs becoming more and more accessible and affordable, and quite frankly, itโs awesome.
When I heard that Emmyโs Organic Cookies were going to become available in Walmart, it got me thinking that I always just considered Walmart as a place where I wouldnโt be able to find healthier foods that I enjoy.
But I hadnโt really been back in a while and I hadnโt really given it a try since I kind of just figured that they didnโt offer healthier alternatives.
So I made it my personal mission to head to Walmart and see what I could find.
You guys, I was SO blown away by the options that they had, not only in terms of fresh produce (uhm, it was literally the same quality and amount of any regular grocery store), but also the products that I use every single day that they offer.
They had everything from all of the typical healthier stuff that I bake with on a daily basis, to an incredible selection of healthier snacks. And yes, you do still have to be careful to read labels a little bit because while dried fruit is good, there are some that add tons of sugar, but overall it was incredible.
When I made my way over to the gluten-free section, I was so excited to see all of the name brand products that I know and love and am buying at Whole Foods alreadyโฆ including my beloved Emmyโs Organic Coconut Cookies.
Iโve already been back to Walmart twice since I went because the prices are slightly lower than when Iโm making purchases elsewhere, itโs in a convenient location for me to just pop in if I need something, and Iโve now created this list of things that I know they have.
The best part about it is that each time Iโve gone back, Iโm seeing more and more healthier products.
Letโs get into my list of products that I found and will be back to buy on a regular basis.
Emmys Organic Cookies โ if youโve been following me for a little while, then you already know I am gung-ho absolutely obsessed with Emmyโs Cookies. Iโve been enjoying these gluten-free, vegan, raw coconut cookies for years and love how they are the perfect size for snacking.
Donโt even get me started on how much Tom loves them. He is known for polishing off an entire bag of nine cookies in one sitting โ he is obsessed. But I donโt blame him because if you put the cacao or peanut butter ones in front of me, I could go nuts too!
Well now they are being offered in Walmart and I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! People ask me all the time where they can get them, and now I can say โWalmart!!โ Thereโs a Walmart in every neck of the woods, right?! We stocked up on the vanilla and peanut butter flavors last week, and they came at an extremely reasonable price, too.
Iโm pretty pumped that such an amazing healthier cookie is now available at such a huge chain like Walmart, it definitely says a lot about the direction we are headed in the wellness world.
Creamy Almond Butter โ Iโm pretty sure the last time I was at Walmart the only types of almond butter they offered had added sugar. Well, not anymore! Thatโs one thing I literally wonโt budge onโฆI hate added sugar to my nut butter because itโs meant to be a salty spread with natural sweetness from nuts, and I feel like it getโs so extreme with all of the sugars.
When searching for a nut butter I look for one or two ingredients: nuts + salt (optional, but I enjoy it in mine!) Not only did Walmart have almond butter without any added sugar, they also had the same with cashew butter and peanut butter. I loved this!!!!
Nuts โ I go through tons and tons of nuts with all of the baking and snacking I do so knowing that I can get nuts in bulk with no other added ingredients is key.
Walmart offered bags of all different sizes and all different nuts for cheaper prices than other stores. They also had tons roasted nuts (with and without salt) for snacking.
Coconut Sugar โ My favorite sugar for baking and I always hear people asking me if there are alternatives for coconut sugar because they canโt find it anywhere! Well, folks, you can find it at Walmart and for a reasonable price! This huge bag is going to be a life saver in my baking.
Quinoa โ Keeping quinoa on hand is one of the best things for my meal prep and for when I need to quickly throw together a starchier side.
We eat quinoa pretty regularly in my house (trick: cook it in bone broth or veggie stock for extra flavor!!) so I like to make sure I always have it. It’s perfect in my Mexican Quinoa Salad!
This massive bag from Walmart is a game changer and clutch for keeping at my use.
Oils โ This is one of the things that impressed me the most. They had a wall of just oils! Seriously, they had every oil under the sun, from coconut oil to avocado oil to even specialty oils like walnut, hazelnut, and hemp seed. Can you say trendy?! Walmart is seriously getting on it.
I picked up both the coconut oil (which I use all the time in my baking) and the avocado oil (which I love to use for cooking because of itโs high smoke point and ability to make my veggies super crispy).
Oats – My go-to staple breakfast 3-4 times a week. There are so many products out there with tons of added sugar and flavoring that is just not necessary.
I always recommend buying plain quick oats, rolled oats, or steel cut oats and then jazzing up like my creamy whipped banana oatmeal recipe.
Dried + Freeze Dried Fruit โ one of my most recent obsessions is dried and freeze dried fruit, so when I saw so many different varieties on the shelves at Walmart, I knew I needed to pick some up.
Just be careful, because some of them have a lot of added sugar! I look for the ones that are just one ingredient: the fruit! We snacked on these apples right after purchasing and they were so.dang.good!
So if I havenโt convinced you to try shopping at Walmart for healthier alternatives, I donโt know what else will! I think you will be impressed and satisfied with the selection that they offer.
Happy Shopping!!
