Ingredients
Method
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot add onions, carrots, celery, and pepper. Cook about 5-6 minutes until softened. Add in garlic and cook another minute.
- Add ground beef and break up, cooking until no longer pink. Add salt, chili powder, and onion powder. Stir until combined.
- Add in honey, worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, tomato sauce, ketchup, and water, stirring until all combined. Let simmer over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until thickened. If too thick, add more liquid.
- Add 2/3 cup meat to each bun and a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Enjoy!

Notes
- Dice the Vegetables Nice and Small: All four veggies (onion, carrots, celery, and green pepper) need to be finely diced before going into the pan, especially the celery. Small pieces ensure they cook through evenly in 5–6 minutes and blend seamlessly into the meat mixture so you're not getting big chunks in every bite.
- Don't Skip the Honey: It might seem like an unusual addition to a savory recipe, but the tablespoon of honey adds a subtle sweetness that's completely undetectable on its own. It just rounds out the whole flavor profile and makes these taste unmistakably like the real deal.
- Let It Simmer Until Thickened: After adding all the sauce ingredients, let the mixture simmer over medium heat for 10–15 minutes until it thickens up nicely. Pull it off the heat too early and you'll end up with a watery, messy filling that won't stay put on the bun.
