Todayās recipe combines the depth of caramelized onions with cream cheese and savory pork sausage. Introducing my French onion dip with sausage!
This dip is perfect for serving or snacking, coming together in just a few easy steps.

Ingredients needed
Hereās a little bit about everything that goes into my French onion sausage dip recipe.
- Yellow onions: The base of this dip is made from two sliced and caramelized onions. Their flavor is rich, sweet, and slightly umami. In other words, a flavor powerhouse!
- Butter: For extra richness, I carmelize my yellow onions in 2 tbsp of butter.
- Salt: 1 tsp of salt enhances all of the flavors and ingredients in this appetizer.
- Thyme: 1 tsp of thyme is the perfect pairing for rich caramelized onions and creamy dip; its aromatic and earthy nature cuts through the richness of this dip.
- Worcestershire sauce: I add 2 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce to this recipe for a touch of tang. It really compliments the sausage in this recipe.
- Garlic: No savory dip is complete without a bit of minced garlic! This recipe calls for 2 cloves, though feel free to throw in an extra if youāre feeling wild.
- Pork sausage: I use 1 lb of tubed pork sausage in this dip. Itās tasty, convenient, and adds a satiating protein source.
- Plain Greek yogurt: I lighten up this French onion dip by using 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt in place of a traditional mayonnaise base. This also adds some extra protein to the dish ā a win-win!
- Cream cheese: I make this dip super creamy by using 8 oz of softened cream cheese as in the base. The results are light, velvety, and oh-so-good.
- Chives: Chopped chives add a lovely color to this dip, along with some extra brightness.

How to make homemade French onion dip with sausage
The first step in this French onion sausage dip recipe is to prep the onions.
Start by cutting 2 yellow onions in half, then slice them thinly. You can, of course, slice as thin or as thick as youād like!
Next, add 2 tbsp of butter to your saucepan and heat over medium-high. Once the butter has melted, add your sliced onions and saute for about five minutes until soft.
Now, add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp thyme, and 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce to your pan. Saute for an additional 10 minutes until your onions are soft and caramelized. Remember to stir often to avoid burning.
Then, add 2 cloves of minced garlic and cook for 5 minutes. Remove this base from the heat and add to a mixing bowl to cool.
Nowāthe sausage! Add 1 lb pork sausage to your frying pan and break it up with a wooden spoon while cooking over medium-high heat. Cook until no more pink is present, then add to the mixing bowl to cool.
Finally, whisk together 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt and 8 oz of softened cream cheese in a separate mixing bowl.
Stir in the cooked onions and sausage, top with chopped chives, and enjoy!

Okay, this French Onion Dip with sausage just rewrote the rules of game-day snacking! š The caramelized onions + crispy sausage combo is pure geniusāwhy settle for store-bought when you can have this level of flavor?
I made it for my fantasy football crew last weekend (used spicy Italian sausage for extra kick) and it disappeared in 10 minutes flat. Pro tip: Double the recipe if youāre feeding a crowd, and serve with thick-cut potato chips for maximum scoopability.
Question for fellow dip enthusiasts: Whatās your ultimate āupgradedā party snack? (Bonus points if it involves cheese⦠because letās be real, cheese makes everything better.)
