French onion sausage dip

I love the complexity of a French onion recipe. Caramelized onions are so rich and complex that it’s no wonder I keep turning to this star ingredient.

Don’t believe me? Just take a look at my Easy French Onion Soup, Sausage French Onion Pasta, and French Onion Chicken.

Today’s recipe combines the depth of caramelized onions with cream cheese and savory pork sausage. Introducing my French onion dip with sausage!

This dip is perfect for serving or snacking, coming together in just a few easy steps.

Ingredients needed

Here’s a little bit about everything that goes into my French onion sausage dip recipe.

  • Yellow onions: The base of this dip is made from two sliced and caramelized onions. Their flavor is rich, sweet, and slightly umami. In other words, a flavor powerhouse!
  • Butter: For extra richness, I carmelize my yellow onions in 2 tbsp of butter.
  • Salt: 1 tsp of salt enhances all of the flavors and ingredients in this appetizer.
  • Thyme: 1 tsp of thyme is the perfect pairing for rich caramelized onions and creamy dip; its aromatic and earthy nature cuts through the richness of this dip.
  • Worcestershire sauce: I add 2 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce to this recipe for a touch of tang. It really compliments the sausage in this recipe.
  • Garlic: No savory dip is complete without a bit of minced garlic! This recipe calls for 2 cloves, though feel free to throw in an extra if you’re feeling wild.
  • Pork sausage: I use 1 lb of tubed pork sausage in this dip. It’s tasty, convenient, and adds a satiating protein source.
  • Plain Greek yogurt: I lighten up this French onion dip by using 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt in place of a traditional mayonnaise base. This also adds some extra protein to the dish – a win-win!
  • Cream cheese: I make this dip super creamy by using 8 oz of softened cream cheese as in the base. The results are light, velvety, and oh-so-good.
  • Chives: Chopped chives add a lovely color to this dip, along with some extra brightness.

Kitchen tools required

Gather these kitchen essentials to complete this French onion dip recipe:

  • Kitchen knife
  • Cutting board
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Two mixing bowls

You’ll also need a few measuring cups, including 1 cup, 1 tbsp, and 1 tsp.

How to make homemade French onion dip with sausage

The first step in this French onion sausage dip recipe is to prep the onions.

Start by cutting 2 yellow onions in half, then slice them thinly. You can, of course, slice as thin or as thick as you’d like!

Next, add 2 tbsp of butter to your saucepan and heat over medium-high. Once the butter has melted, add your sliced onions and saute for about five minutes until soft.

Now, add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp thyme, and 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce to your pan. Saute for an additional 10 minutes until your onions are soft and caramelized. Remember to stir often to avoid burning.

Then, add 2 cloves of minced garlic and cook for 5 minutes. Remove this base from the heat and add to a mixing bowl to cool.

Now—the sausage! Add 1 lb pork sausage to your frying pan and break it up with a wooden spoon while cooking over medium-high heat. Cook until no more pink is present, then add to the mixing bowl to cool.

Finally, whisk together 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt and 8 oz of softened cream cheese in a separate mixing bowl.

Stir in the cooked onions and sausage, top with chopped chives, and enjoy!

Recipe tips

Below are some common French onion sausage dip questions. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post!

How to serve French onion dip

This dip is positively yummy when served with crunchy tortilla chips, pita slices, or fresh vegetables.

Want to go the extra mile? Serve this dip with roasted veggie skewers.

French onion dip is traditionally served cold, though you can serve it warm for a more comforting appetizer.

French onion dip add-ins

There are several ways to have fun with this recipe. If you’re feeling creative, try some of these tasty add-ins:

  • Cheese – Shaved parmesan, melted mozzarella, or gruyere
  • Toasted nuts – Salted walnuts, crushed almonds, or pecans
  • Spice – Cayenne pepper, spicy chorizo, fresh jalapeno peppers
  • Fresh herbs – Chopped parsley garnish, fresh thyme leaves
  • Bold toppings – Crushed potato chips, caramelized mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes

Can I use a different sausage in this recipe?

If you don’t eat pork, you can definitely swap for the sausage of your choice. Try turkey, veggie, or chicken sausage.

Can I make French onion dip dairy-free?

You can easily make this recipe dairy-free with just a few easy swaps.

First, swap your plain Greek yogurt for a dairy-free variety. Both Forager Cashew Yogurt and Kite Hill Greek-style Yogurt make great choices.

Next, swap your cream cheese for a dairy-free spread. I like the Violife Cream Cheese Block – it’s scarily similar to the real thing!

Finally, swap butter for Miyoko’s Plant Milk Butter.

Can I make French onion dip vegan?

You can make this recipe vegan by using dairy-free alternatives and choosing a meat-free sausage like Beyond Sausage Links.

Storing leftovers

To store this homemade French onion dip, add it to an airtight container. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days.

I wouldn’t recommend freezing this dip as the dairy ingredients will separate and ruin the texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 yellow onions
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 lb pork sausageĀ
  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • chives for topping

Instructions

  1. Slice onions very thinly. I cut mine in half and then slice thinly, like a half moon.
  2. Add butter to a large sauce pan and turn on heat to medium-high. Once melted, add onions and saute onions until just softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Then add salt, thyme, and worcestershire. Let saute over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until beginning to caramelize.
  4. Add in garlic and cook for 5 more minutes. Turn off heat and place onions in a bowl to cool.
  5. In the same pan, add sausage. Break up and cook until no longer pink. Add sausage to bowl with onions to cool.
  6. While sausage and onions are cooling, whisk together yogurt and cream cheese. Stir in onions and sausage mixture. Mix until well combined and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add chives on top.
  7. Serve with chips, pita, or veggies.

    Hi!

Could I make this ahead of a party and then reheat in a crock pot?

Okay, this French Onion Dip with sausage just rewrote the rules of game-day snacking! šŸˆ The caramelized onions + crispy sausage combo is pure genius—why settle for store-bought when you can have this level of flavor?

I made it for my fantasy football crew last weekend (used spicy Italian sausage for extra kick) and it disappeared in 10 minutes flat. Pro tip: Double the recipe if you’re feeding a crowd, and serve with thick-cut potato chips for maximum scoopability.

Question for fellow dip enthusiasts: What’s your ultimate ā€˜upgraded’ party snack? (Bonus points if it involves cheese… because let’s be real, cheese makes everything better.)
