Easy and delicious cottage cheese banana muffins
What is it about muffins that makes them so good? Is it because they're basically breakfast cupcakes? Or that they're so easy to make? Maybe it's that you can make so many varieties, like these Healthy Pumpkin Muffins, Paleo Sweet Potato Muffins, and Apple Crumble Oatmeal Muffins.
No matter what you love about muffins, these healthy cottage cheese blender muffins have it all, and then some. They're sweet and satisfying, delicious, and nutrient-dense. Basically, the best breakfast or snack to have handy on the go.
Now, cottage cheese might seem like an odd ingredient, but it sneaks in a lot of good protein, making them super filling. Add it with banana, and they are the secret to what makes these muffins perfectly moist. It really does feel like a cheat code for enjoying something sweet without paying the price later!

- Great for meal prep, since they store well on the counter, in the fridge, or in the freezer
- Easy to customize with mix-ins like berries or dried fruit instead of chocolate chips
Erin's Expert Tips
From my kitchen to yours
- Scrape down the blender a couple of times as you go. I find the oats and cottage cheese like to stick to the sides, so a quick scrape halfway through helps everything blend evenly.
- Let the batter sit for 5 minutes before stirring in the chocolate chips. This allows the oats to absorb some of the moisture and thickens the batter so the chips don't all sink straight to the bottom.
- Use a cookie scoop to fill the muffin cups. This is my go-to trick for getting even-sized muffins without making a mess.
- Fill the muffin cups about ¾ full. I've learned this gives them enough room to rise nicely without overflowing!
Ingredients for Cottage Cheese Blender Muffins
Here’s a little bit about everything that goes into these cottage cheese blender muffins:

- Banana: For the best flavor and natural sweetness, make sure your banana is nice and ripe before using it.
- Rolled oats: These thicken the batter and give the muffins their texture. I haven't tried quick oats in this recipe, but they should work; just keep in mind the texture will be a bit different.
- Cottage cheese: Adds a nice boost of protein while keeping the muffins moist and fluffy. If you're not a cottage cheese fan, Greek yogurt is a good substitute.
- Almond milk: This helps thin out the batter just enough to get that perfect fluffy texture. Any milk you have on hand should work fine here.
- Maple syrup: Sweetens the muffins naturally without needing any refined sugar. Honey works well as a substitute if you have it.
- Vanilla extract: A single teaspoon of vanilla extract makes a huge difference in the taste of these muffins — don't omit this!
- Cinnamon: This adds a warm, cozy flavor that pairs perfectly with the banana.
- Chocolate chips: Feel free to save a few extra for sprinkling on top before baking!
How to make muffins with cottage cheese
Start by preheating your oven and greasing a muffin pan, then add all the ingredients except the chocolate chips into a high-powered blender. Blend everything until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed and adding a splash more milk if the batter feels too thick.
Let the batter rest for about 5 minutes so it can thicken up, then stir in the chocolate chips. Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups, top with a few extra chocolate chips, and bake until golden. Let the muffins cool for about 10 minutes before digging in!

- Step 1: Prepare Ingredients. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease muffin pan with nonstick spray. In a high-powered blender, add ingredients as listed, stopping before chocolate chips.

- Step 2: Make the Batter. Blend until completely smooth, scraping down the sides as needed and adding more milk if too thick. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes to thicken, then stir in the chocolate chips.

- Step 3: Assemble the Muffins. Divide the batter evenly amongst muffin pans. Then top with a few more chocolate chips.

- Step 4: Bake, Cool, and Serve. Next, bake for 20 minutes. Then let your muffins cool for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some common questions about these healthy cottage cheese blender muffins. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post!
Cottage cheese muffins taste fabulous as they are, but if you want to add extra flavor, you can do so with fruit! Load up your muffins with anything from fresh blueberries and diced strawberries or raspberries to dried bananas or apples!
This usually just means the batter needs a bit more time to rest before you scoop it into the muffin cups. If it's still too thin after resting, try adding a bit more oats next time to help thicken things up!

Adding cottage cheese to your muffins makes them incredibly moist and tender, and it gives them a serious protein boost without needing any protein powder. There are so many ways to use it. Try my Cottage Cheese Protein Pancakes or Cottage Cheese Lasagna next!
Yes, an 8x8 baking dish works as a substitute here. Just keep in mind you'll need to watch the bake time closely, since it will likely take longer than the muffins, so check for doneness with a toothpick before pulling it out.
Storing leftovers
These muffins store well at room temperature, in the fridge, or in the freezer. Just place them in an airtight container to keep them moist. They'll keep for 3-4 days at room temperature, 5-6 days in the fridge, and up to 1 month in the freezer. If frozen, let them thaw and give them a quick zap in the microwave before enjoying.

Kirsten says
These are very tasty but no matter how many times I make them, I follow the recipe exactly and the batter is pure liquid, not thick at all and the chocolate chips just sink to the bottom the second they are added. I have no idea why no one else has had this issue in the comments. My measurements are exact yet the batter is so thin it’s like pouring juice into each cup. I am baffled, please let me know why this happens, as it’s frustrating to have all the chocolate sitting at the bottom of the muffin.
Erin says
Hi Kirsten, try letting the batter rest for 10 minutes before scooping. If not, add in more oats next time! 🙂
Lauren H says
yum!! I recently made banana bread coffee syrup and was left with three mashed bananas that had simmered in brown sugar/water/cinnamon. I subbed the mash for the banana and maple syrup the recipe calls for and the muffins came out perfect!!
Erin says
Hi Lauren, so glad you enjoyed them!!
abby says
I make these almost weekly! They don’t last long in our house! My 1 year old is obsessed.
Curious - do you think we could make batter ahead and freeze it?
Erin says
Hi Abby, so happy you love them so much!! I haven't done that. I'd suggest making the muffins and freezing them. 🙂
Mary Ann says
Could I use an 8 by 8 baking dish instead of muffins?
Erin says
Hi Mary Ann, sure, give it a try. You'll just need to watch it and monitor for bake time.
