‘Tis the season for all of the pumpkin treats! These Classic Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins are easy to make and will ease you into the fall festivities. Made with pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, and of course, chocolate chips.

The perfect autumn pumpkin and chocolate chip muffins

Autumn is here! And what better way to celebrate, so to speak, than with a nice, fresh batch of classic pumpkin chocolate chip muffins?

These muffins are easy to whip together and are made with flavorful ingredients for delicious tastes in each and every bite. They make the best post-dinner treat, but they’re also perfect for enjoying for breakfast alongside coffee, or as an afternoon snack!

Ingredients in this classic pumpkin chocolate chip muffins recipe

Ready to get started? Begin by gathering up everything you’ll need to make these easy muffins. Like most baked goods, they use simple ingredients like flour, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Below is everything you’ll need:

Dry ingredients

  • Flour: First up, 1 and 3/4 cup of all purpose flour. This is going to help the muffins reach a bready (but fluffy!) texture.
  • Sugar: Next, sweeten things up with 1 and 1/3 cup of white sugar. Brown sugar won’t work here, so be sure to use white.
  • Baking soda: Next, throw in 1 tsp of baking soda to help the muffins bake properly.
  • Baking powder: Follow the soda with 1/2 tsp of baking powder.
  • Spices: Then, flavor things up by adding 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg, and 1/2 tsp of salt.

Wet Ingredients

  • Pumpkin puree: First up for the wet ingredients is 1 cup of canned pumpkin puree. This ingredient is what gives the muffins their delicious pumpkin flavor!
  • Eggs: Follow the puree with 2 large eggs.
  • Oil: Next up is the oil. Use 1/2 cup. Any neutral oil (such as vegetable oil or canola oil) will work.
  • Water: Help the batter reach the right consistency by adding 1/3 cup of water.
  • Vanilla extract: Last but not least, add 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

Mix Ins

  • Chocolate chips: You can’t have pumpkin chocolate chip muffins without the chocolate chips! Add 12 oz of your favorite brand.

Kitchen tools used to make this pumpkin recipe

When it comes to kitchen tools, around 8 items will help you reach pumpkin muffin success! Here’s what you’ll use:

  • Muffin pan
  • Muffin liners
  • Cooking spray
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer or stirring utensil
  • Baking spatula
  • Measuring cups: 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, 3/4 cup, 1 cup

How to make these classic pumpkin chocolate chip muffins

You can expect this recipe to require around 10 minutes of prep time, followed by 19-22 minutes of cook time. In only around a half hour of total time, these delicious muffins will be complete!

First, preheat the oven to 350°F and line the muffin tins with paper liners and nonstick spray.

Next, grab a medium sized bowl and whisk together all of the dry ingredients.

Using a large bowl, beat the eggs with the pumpkin, and then beat in the oil. Whisk in the water and vanilla.

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet until fully incorporated.

Next, gently fold in the chocolate chips. Be careful not to over mix. Add more chocolate chips on top if desired.

Bake the muffins for 19-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

What to add to your muffins

Thinking about adding a twist to your muffins? Ice ’em! A nice and creamy cream cheese icing would taste delicious atop these muffins. You could also add a layer of peanut butter!

For a bit of crunch, mix in crushed walnuts or pecans.

Recipe Tips

What are muffins made of?

Every muffin recipe is different, but this one contains two sets of ingredients, separated by whether they’re a dry or wet item. Dry ingredients include flour, white sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, and wet ingredients include pumpkin puree, eggs, oil, water, vanilla extract. They also include chocolate chips!

Do chocolate muffins contain egg?

Some may not, but this recipe does! Two eggs help create a nice and fluffy muffin texture.

Is muffin a batter or dough?

When muffin ingredients are combined, they form a batter, similar to a cake.

Are muffins good after 5 days?

Muffins can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. With either method, place the muffins in an airtight container before storing. It depends on the recipe, but these muffins should stay nice and fresh for 3-4 days. If refrigerated, you can probably get an extra day out of them!

    I have made these 20 times over the last few months. I am not the best baker or chef, and this recipe even made me seem fancy. I am a teacher in Philadelphia, and they are the perfect “on the go” breakfast for my crazy mornings. I also have two toddlers and they beg me for these 🙂

    I just made these muffins and they were phenomenal! These muffins are the perfect cozy treat for fall and winter—exactly what I’ve been craving.
