This Healthy Chocolate Granola is crunchy, chocolatey, and made with simple pantry staples like oats, nuts, cocoa powder, and maple syrup. It’s sweet enough to feel a little fun, but still totally reasonable for breakfast or snack time.

The most delicious chocolate granola
If you’ve been here for a while, you know I really love a good homemade granola. I’ve made a few different versions over the years, but somehow I had never made a chocolate one, which honestly felt overdue. And once I finally did, I was very into it.
The nice thing is, it’s really simple to make. You mix the dry ingredients in one bowl, warm the chocolatey syrup on the stove, stir everything together, and bake until crisp. Then the melted chocolate goes on at the end, which is where things get especially good (and a little dangerous if you’re standing too close to the pan).
The first time I made this, I kept grabbing little clusters while it cooled because I could not help myself. It has that deep cocoa flavor, plenty of crunch, and just enough sweetness to make it feel special without turning into a full-on dessert. It’s fun, easy, and very good in a yogurt bowl (or straight by the handful, which is also valid)!

Ingredients needed to make this granola recipe
The ingredients used in this recipe are very simple. If you do a lot of baking, you probably already have most of these items in your pantry! Here’s an overview of everything you’ll need:
- Rolled oats: You’ll need 4 cups of rolled oats for the base of the granola. Steel cut oats may be used in place of rolled oats at a 1:1 ratio. Baking time may need to be slightly increased.
- Nuts: You’ll need 1 cup finely chopped nuts for crunch and richness. I’ve used almonds and walnuts, but pecans work too.
- Coconut flakes: You’ll need 1/2 cup coconut flakes, which are optional but add extra texture. Leave them out if you do not want any coconut in the mix.
- Salt: You’ll need 1/2 tsp salt to balance the sweetness and bring out the chocolate flavor.
- Coconut sugar: You’ll need 1/2 cup of coconut sugar for sweetness and a lightly caramel-like flavor. Brown sugar works if that is what you have.
- Cocoa powder: You’ll need 1/2 cup of cocoa powder for the rich chocolate base. Unsweetened cocoa powder works best.
- Maple syrup: You’ll need 1/2 cup pure maple syrup to sweeten the granola and help it clump together a bit.
- Coconut oil: You’ll need 1/2 cup of coconut oil to help the granola crisp up in the oven. Refined coconut oil is a good option if you do not want a coconut flavor! You can also use olive, avocado, almond, or vegetable oil in place of coconut oil. Use a 1:1 ratio.
- Vanilla: You’ll need 1 tsp vanilla to round out the chocolate flavor.
- Chocolate chips or chopped chocolate: you’ll need 1 cup of chocolate chips or 2 chopped chocolate bars for the melted chocolate finish.
- Flake sea salt: This is optional, but a little on top is really good if you like that salty chocolate combo.

Kitchen materials needed to make homemade granola
This granola recipe is pretty simple and only requires about 6 or 7 kitchen items. To make this dish, you’ll need:
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Two mixing bowls
- Saucepan
- Mixing spoon or baking spatula

How to make this easy chocolate granola recipe
Healthy chocolate granola is very easy to make. From start to finish, expect around 45 minutes of prep and cook time!
Preheat your oven to 325°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, stir together the oats, chopped nuts, coconut flakes, and salt. Make sure everything is mixed well so the coconut and nuts are evenly spread throughout.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the coconut sugar, cocoa powder, maple syrup, and coconut oil. Stir for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture looks smooth. Turn off the heat, then stir in the vanilla.
Pour the chocolate mixture over the oat mixture and stir until everything is fully coated. You want all the dry ingredients to look glossy and evenly mixed, especially around the bottom of the bowl.
Spread the granola onto the baking sheet and press it into an even layer. Pressing it down helps create bigger clusters, which is always a win. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
As soon as the granola comes out of the oven, sprinkle the chocolate chips or chopped chocolate over the top. Return the pan to the oven for 5 minutes, just until the chocolate melts. Then stir the granola so the melted chocolate coats little bits throughout.
Let the granola cool for 1 hour before breaking it apart into crispy clusters. This part matters! It crisps up as it cools, so do not rush it.

Recipe Tips
Below are some common chocolate granola questions. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post! I’ll be happy to help.
DOES THIS GRANOLA TASTE LIKE COCONUT?
Not necessarily. Coconut sugar does not really taste like coconut, and refined coconut oil is very neutral. If you want even less coconut flavor, skip the coconut flakes.
HOW DO I GET BIG CLUSTERS IN HOMEMADE GRANOLA?
Press the granola into a firm, even layer before baking, then let it cool completely before breaking it apart. That helps it set into larger pieces instead of loose crumbs.
WHY IS MY GRANOLA NOT CRISPY YET?
Granola gets crisp as it cools, not just while it bakes. If it still seems soft straight from the oven, let it sit for the full cooling time before deciding it needs more oven time.
CAN I USE DIFFERENT NUTS?
Yes. Almonds, walnuts, pecans, and peanuts all work well here. Use what you like or what you already have.
WHAT CAN I SERVE WITH CHOCOLATE GRANOLA?
It’s great with milk, over yogurt, on smoothie bowls, or just by the handful. You can also sprinkle it over banana slices or cottage cheese for a quick snack.
IS THIS GOOD FOR MEAL PREP?
Yes, very. It keeps well at room temperature, so it’s easy to make once and use throughout the week for breakfast or snacks.

Storing leftovers
Store the granola in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Make sure it is fully cooled before storing so it stays crisp. If you want to keep the texture as crunchy as possible, use a container with a tight-fitting lid and keep it in a cool, dry spot.

Ok this is the best granola I’ve ever made, and I’ve made a lot of granola. Seriously so addictive… we ate it in 2 days and we’re a family of 3. Even my mom loved it and she doesn’t like chocolate desserts usually. My dad said it’s the best granola he’s ever had. Seriously the perfect balance of bitter sweet acidic (umami??) addictive chocolatey goodness. And the mixture you stir in the granola can double as a vegan hot fudge if you have some ice cream lying around!!
Erin says
Hi Dee, I am so happy you and him both loved it! 🙂
Grace K says
I love this recipe! I’m allergic to nuts so added chia seeds instead and it turned out great! Made twice and so delicious as a snack, dessert, or yogurt topper.
Erin says
Hi Grace, I am so glad you enjoyed it and made it your own!
Micaela says
This is the recipe I ALWAYS come back to! Just made a batch for the week, seriously the best! Love that it’s all real ingredients opposed to the granola bought in stores that is so $$ and lots of additives.
Erin says
Hi Micaela, thanks for sharing! Such a money saver and so much healthier!!
Christina says
No amount of words can describe my love for this granola. I can literally eat half of the pan within a few hours of it coming out of the oven. That is how good it is. I did not think I was a granola person until I tried this recipe! It doesn’t last more than two days in my house (and there’s only two of us who live here LOL oops)
Erin says
Hi Christina, I am thrilled you love it so much!
Sofia says
5 star granola!! Seriously so easy & delicious. I’ve made it 3 times in the past 6 weeks. Make it exactly as written!
Erin says
Hi Sofia, I love to hear that!! Thank you so much for your support!!
Pam says
Hello!
Do I need to stir the granola half way through the cook time (not just when adding the chocolate chips?) Or just leave it to bake for the 25-30 mins, and only stir when it’s chip time?
Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Erin says
Hi Pam, just stir it when the chocolate goes in! Enjoy!!
Rebecca says
Soooo yummy! Nice and crunchy and chocolatey!! I didn’t stir in the melted chocolate chips at the end so I had chunks of chocolate in each bite! New go-to granola recipe
Erin says
Hi Rebecca, I am so glad you enjoyed it and ah that sounds good though with chunks of chocolate! YUM!
Suzanne Jones says
Holy Cow! I made this recipe for my household of guys, and they all loved it!!! They eat it for breakfast, snack, and on ice cream for dessert. We used to buy a pricey chocolate peanut butter granola from the store, but this is even better. I didn’t use the coconut, coconut oil, or coconut sugar, since my guys don’t like it. I used canola oil and a mixture of honey and brown sugar instead. I also added peanut butter chips (we’re peanut butter addicts), and the flavor is amazing! Thank you for our new pantry staple!
Erin says
Hi Suzanne, thank you so much for your kind words! I am so happy that everyone loved it so much!! Great substitutions and add ins. I love peanut butter too!!
Gina says
Loved it ! It was amazing. However I didn’t chunky cluster pieces of granola just individual loose oats. Any idea what I did wrong ?
Joanne says
I’m trying to be healthier by making everything from scratch. I’ve also taken out white sugar. So I figured this was a great recipe to add to my “healthy” collection. But if I sit and eat the whole thing, well that’s not very healthy is it 🤷♀️ Absolutely delicious. Thank you for sharing.
Erin says
Hi Joanne, I’m so happy to hear you’re baking more! I want to eat it all at once too!
Merbs says
I love the ingredients and the recipe looks great, but I’m not sure I’d call it low sugar. It has twice the sugar of coco-puffs – though better sources! – and 30% more than the Cascadian Farms Dark Chocolate granola I was looking to replace. I think my hope for low or no sugar granola is a pipe dream, because what would hold it together?
Erin says
its low in the type of sugar that spikes your blood sugar. coconut sugar is low-glycemic and maple is more natural than the ingredients in cocoa puffs and cascadian farms.
Li says
Love it, so addictive and so good. Making again today!
Erin says
Hi Li! Thanks for the kind words and so happy you love the granola! 🙂
Marcela says
This is soooo yummy!!! Best chocolate granola ever!!!!
Erin says
Hi Marcela, thank you so much! I am so happy you love it! 🙂

I recently bought a 5 lb bag of gf oats at Costco and have made quite a few granola recipes, but this one is by far my favorite!! It’s so good and so easy to make! I’ve made a batch a week for about 3 weeks and everyone I’ve given it to has loved it! One of the best recipes I’ve ever tried, hands down 🙂
Erin says
Hi Amanda, thank you so much for your kind words!! I am so happy everyone loves the granola!! 🙂
Caroline Larson says
I have made this MULTIPLE times and it always is so good! This time I subbed the coconut oil for unsweetened applesauce and it still worked! Just cooked it a tad longer! I’ve also used olive oil and works just as well!
Erin says
Hi Caroline! I am so happy you love the granola and make it your own! 🙂
Samantha Collins says
Love this recipe! Added freeze dried raspberries too. Delicious!
Erin says
Hi Samantha! Thank you so much for the kind words and love you made it your own!

I knew this would be a goodie but wow! I omitted the nuts and coconut flakes because I didn’t have those ingredients. My new go to granola recipe for sure!!
Erin says
Hi Lindsay! Thank you so much for the kind words! I am so glad you love it!
Jessie Kong says
BETTER THAN ANY STOREBOUGHT GRANOLA. I’d always believed I’d found the best granola ever (Love Crunch). But this recipe was incredible and I can’t believe I made something that tastes better than what I could buy. This granola has the PERFECT flavor profile and proportions: rich chocolate flavor, perfect sweetness, a little saltiness, a teeny hint of warm coconut (didn’t add coconut flakes), and bites of nuttiness (I highly recommend walnuts). Also super fun and easy to make!
Erin says
Hi Jessie, thank you so much for your kind words! I am so happy you enjoyed the granola so much! 🙂
Jess Valasco says
SO SO SO GOOD!!!!!!! WOHOOOOI
Erin says
Hi Jess! Thank you so much!! 🙂
Nelly says
This granola is wonderful! I actually ended up omitting the coconut sugar because we had run of all solid sugars. I don’t like super sweet things anyways and so I thought this sweetness level was just right for me. I also halved the coconut oil (again, we ran out––quarantine life!) and thought that the granola after cooling was still incredibly crunchy and clumpy… I can imagine the full amount of oil would only make it even more delicious. Loved the addition of coconut, too! It was overall very easy, tasty, and way more affordable than store bought versions especially because it makes such a large amount! I’ll be making this again for sure!
Erin says
Hi Nelly! Thank you so much for your kind words and glad you made it your own! 🙂
