Cookie Butter Puppy Chow
Looking for an easy snack to suit your sweet tooth? Look no further than my cookie butter puppy chow. If you've never heard of it, puppy chow is a homemade candy mix, primarily loved in the Midwest. In its purest form, it's Chex cereal coated in peanut butter and melted chocolate, then finished with powdered sugar — crunchy, sweet, and super easy to throw together, kind of like my Lucky Charms Bark.
My cookie butter rendition takes this humble treat to a whole new level, made with creamy cookie butter and crushed Biscoff cookies. The combination is sweet and caramelized with a hint of warm spices. My biggest tip? Make a double batch — you're going to want it! Ingredients needed
Here’s a little bit on everything that goes into my Biscoff puppy chow:

- Butter: 2 tbsp, helps everything melt down and combine
- Cookie butter: ½ cup; Biscoff is my brand of choice for that warm depth of brown sugar, caramel, and cinnamon
- Semisweet chocolate chips: ½ cup, melted until silky smooth
- Salt: ¼ tsp, added to the coating to enhance all the flavors
- Rice Chex: 5 cups; stick with the original recipe or this puppy chow will be way too sweet
- Powdered sugar: 1 ½ cups, for that classic sweet coating
- Biscoff cookies: 2 cups, lightly crushed, for texture and caramelized flavor
How to make cookie butter puppy chow

- Melt the butter. Add 2 tablespoon of butter to a saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until melted.

- Make the chocolate cookie butter coating. Add ½ cup cookie butter, ½ cup chocolate chips, and ¼ teaspoon salt to the saucepan. Mix well and continue stirring until fully melted and combined. Turn off the heat and remove from the burner.

- Coat the cereal. Add 5 cups of Rice Chex to a large mixing bowl. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over top and gently toss with a large spoon so you don't crush the Chex. Continue until each piece is coated.

- Add the powdered sugar. Add 1 ½ cups of powdered sugar and repeat the coating method. For easy mixing, add the chocolate-coated Chex to a large ziplock bag with the powdered sugar and shake until coated.

- Finish with Biscoff. Stir in 2 cups of lightly crushed Biscoff cookies (use a rolling pin to crush them). Stir to combine, then dig in!
Erin's Expert Recipe Tips
- Toss gently when coating the Chex so you don't crush the cereal.
- Use a large ziplock bag for the powdered sugar step if you want easier, mess-free mixing.
- Double the batch and work in two smaller batches when coating to prevent clumping and ensure even coverage.
- Let refrigerated puppy chow sit out for about 15 minutes before serving so the coating softens back up.
- Storage: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for 4-5 days. Refrigerate if you live in a warm climate.

This Biscoff puppy chow is great in a large serving bowl or individual paper cups. For a party presentation, I recommend a treat board alongside other desserts. It's also perfect for snacking whenever you need something sweet — a great late-night treat.
While Rice Chex is the traditional choice, other cereals can transform this recipe:
Extra crunchy: Corn Flakes or Rice Krispies
Super sweet: Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Cookie Crisp
Macro-friendly: Shredded Wheat or Catalina Crunch
Feel free to customize with your favorite add-ins: pretzel pieces, popcorn, white chocolate chips, sprinkles, chocolate candies, mini marshmallows, crushed shortbread cookies, or potato chips.
Puppy chow isn't pooch-friendly — humans only! The name comes from the shape of Chex cereal; the little squares resemble dog kibble once coated in chocolate. Depending on where you're from, it's also called "muddy buddies" or "reindeer chow."
Biscoff cookies and cookie butter are both naturally plant-based. Just swap in a plant-based butter alternative and vegan chocolate chips for a fully vegan version.=
