Swirling flavors and loads of chocolate and peanut butter chips make these Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies an instant hit. The traditional baking ingredients keep it simple, and the prep is a breeze!

The best peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie recipe

Achieving the perfect cookie isn’t an easy feat. But somehow, this recipe would make you think it’s the simplest thing in the world! This is the best peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie recipe and it comes together in hardly any time at all. Plus, it tastes incredible! From the peanut butter, vanilla, and sugar to the gooey peanut butter chips and chocolate chips, each bite is better than the last.

This is one of my favorite dessert recipes to whip up. Once you try it, you’ll say the same! You’ll want to try these after they’ve cooled but while they’re still fresh from the oven. Nice and warm, the flavor is to die for!

Ingredients in peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies

This chewy cookie recipe combines traditional baking ingredients (flour, butter, sugar, salt, egg) with peanut butter and two scrumptious chip flavors (peanut butter and chocolate) for the ultimate peanut butter chocolate chip cookie. You’ll want to make these again and again!

  • Flour: This recipe kicks off with 1.5 cups of all purpose flour. This is going to serve as the base of the cookies.
  • Baking soda: 1 tsp of baking soda will help the cookies rise properly.
  • Baking powder: Follow the baking soda with 1/2 tsp of baking powder. Both are essential to the success of the cookies, but you can substitute this one with extra soda if needed. Keep reading to learn more!
  • Salt: 1/2 tsp of salt makes a world of difference when it comes to the flavor! Be sure not to skip this step.
  • Butter: Next, 1/2 cup of room temperature softened butter serves as the “oil” component of the recipe. This is going to make the cookies nice and moist.
  • Sugar: Then comes the sugar! You’ll want to use a mixture of white and brown sugar for these peanut butter cookies. Use 1/3 cup white granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup (packed) brown sugar.
  • Egg: 1 large egg is needed for this recipe.
  • Vanilla extract: Add even more flavor with 1 tsp of pure vanilla extract. Like the salt, this ingredient is small but mighty when it comes to flavor!
  • Peanut butter: Finally, the peanut butter! You can’t have peanut butter cookies without it. You will need 1 cup, and I recommend using Skippy’s natural version. You can use crunchy or creamy peanut butter.
  • Peanut butter chips: 3/4 cup of peanut butter chips will add so much delicious flavor to the cookies!
  • Chocolate chips: Finish off the recipe with another 3/4 chips, this time chocolate! I recommend semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips if that’s what you have.

Tools used to make this peanut butter cookie recipe

When it comes to kitchen tools, this recipe keeps things pretty simple. If you don’t have an electric mixer, don’t worry! Some traditional elbow grease will do the trick.

  • Cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Cookie scoop

Finally, you’ll need a variety of measuring cup sizes. Gather the following: 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/3 cup, 1/2 cup, 3/4 cup, and 1 cup.

How to make easy peanut butter chocolate chip cookies

Ready to begin? Once you’ve gathered your ingredients and tools, you can expect the total time to be less than 30 minutes. Let’s get started!

To begin, preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Then, set aside.

Next, use a large mixing bowl and a hand mixer (or a stand mixer) to beat together the butter and sugars. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until creamy. Then, mix in the peanut butter.

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, continuing to mix with the hand mixer. Once all of the dough is combined, stir in the peanut butter and chocolate chips.

Using a small cookie scooper, scoop the dough and place the cookie dough balls on the parchment lined baking sheet.

Bake for 13-15 minutes or until the cookies are cooked through. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before eating. Sprinkle with flakey sea salt if desired.

Store your cookies in a freezer bag or an airtight container.

Step-by-step Instructions of how to make Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Substitution Tip

Need to substitute an ingredient or two? Not to worry! These easy swaps will help your recipe come together seamlessly.

Baking powder
Did you know that you can substitute baking soda for baking powder? Use 1/4 tsp of soda for every 1 tsp of powder that the recipe calls for. In the case of this recipe, you will need an additional 1/8 of baking soda to replace the baking powder.

Egg
If you’d like to substitute the egg, you can use applesauce in the amount of 1/4 cup. You can also swap it with a chia seed “egg.” To do this, mix 1 tbsp of chia seeds with 3 tbsp of water. Once the seeds have absorbed the water, add them to the batter where it calls for the egg.

Skippy natural peanut butter
Peanut butter can be swapped with any other nut butter or sunflower seed butter.

Peanut butter chips or chocolate chips
If you’re out of one of these, you can substitute with the other! Just keep in mind that doing so will change the final flavor of the cookies. You’re also welcome to simply omit one or the other if needed.

Recipe Tips

How to make a cookie more crunchy?

One trick to getting crisper cookies is the texture of the butter. If you use melted butter, your cookies tend to wind up crispier! This recipe calls for softened butter, but you can pre-melt it if you’d like.

What makes cookies chewier?

Both the brown sugar and butter contribute to a chewier cookie! You’ll likely find these cookies to be crispy on the outside and chewier/softer on the inside.

Optional ingredient additions

In the mood to add some extra mix-ins to your cookie recipe? Here are some ideas!

  • Dried fruit: Dried fruit like dried apples, bananas, and mangoes also taste great in cookie recipes.
  • Chopped nuts: Chopped walnuts, peanuts, or pecans add crunch and flavor to any cookie recipe!
  • Chopped candy: Add extra chocolate flavor by crushing up Twix, M&Ms, or Reese’s Cups!

Hi! I made these today, and they tasted really good. The did come out a little grainy? I measured my flour with a spoon so I don’t think I used too much? Any recs on how to adjust the sugar to a lesser amount without altering the texture/taste? Thanks!!

So easy, delicious, and moist! Batter was enough to make 12 regular size muffins and a tray of mini. My husband has been popping the minis like candy!
