Easy and delicious apple crumble pie

Why decide between an apple pie and an apple crumble when you can have both? This delicious apple treat combines the best of both dessert worlds with a classic pie filling and a perfectly crunchy crumble topping!

Apple crumble pie makes the perfect Thanksgiving dessert, but it’s also great for any other time of the year. With a delicious apple filling and a brown sugar crumble, you’re going to want to try this asap!

Ingredients in this easy apple crumble pie recipe

This recipe has three sets of ingredients that make up the crust, pie filling, and crumble topping. Below is a list of everything you’ll need, and don’t worry: many of the ingredients carry over.

Crust

  • Flour: To begin making the crust, start with 1.5 cups of white all purpose flour.
  • Salt: Then, 1/2 tsp of salt helps make the crust taste delicious.
  • Sugar: Include 2 tbsp of white sugar for the perfect salty and sweet flavor combo.
  • Butter: Next, 6 tbsp of cold, cubed butter will help create the perfect crust. Be sure the butter is cold!
  • Water: Last up for the crust is 4-6 tbsp of ice cold water.

Pie Filling

  • Apples: First up for the pie filling: apples! Use four granny smith and four honeycrisp. All should be peeled, cored, and sliced thin prior to using in the recipe.
  • Sugar: Next, sweeten things up with 1/2 cup of white sugar.
  • Flour: 1/4 cup of white flour will help the filling thicken up properly.
  • Lemon juice: Next, add a dash of tangy flavor with 2 tbsp of lemon juice.
  • Spices: Create a classic apple pie flavor with 2 tsp of ground cinnamon and 1/4 tsp of nutmeg.
  • Vanilla: Last but not least, finish off the filling with 2 tsp of vanilla extract.

Crumble Topping

  • Flour: The crumble topping begins with a base of 1 cup of flour.
  • Walnuts: 1 cup of chopped walnuts is one of the secret ingredients in this dish! They help make the crumble perfectly crunchy.
  • Brown sugar: Add deliciously sweet flavor with 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
  • Cinnamon: Then, 2 tsp of cinnamon adds the perfect amount of nutty flavor.
  • Butter: Finish off the crumble with 1/2 cup of melted butter.

All the kitchen tools you’ll need to make an apple crumble pie

To make this pie, you will need around 9 kitchen tools in addition to a variety of measuring cups. To make the prep as easy as possible, I recommend gathering all of the tools before you begin.

  • Food processor
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Butter or nonstick spray for greasing the pie dish
  • 9-inch pie dish
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Measuring cups: 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, and 1 cup

How to make this apple crumb pie recipe

Ready to get started? When all is said and done, the pie yields 6 delicious slices!

To begin, grab your food processor and add 3/4 cup of the flour, followed by the salt and sugar. Add the cubed butter and let the processor run for about 20-30 seconds until a crumbly dough forms. Add the rest of the flour and pulse 4-5 more times until the mixture becomes fine crumbles.

Next, add the dough to a large bowl and sprinkle 2 tbsp of the ice water on top. Using a spatula, press the water into the dough and work it by pressing the crumbles together around the bowl. Add more water as needed until you’re able to pinch the dough and it holds together. Form the dough into a ball and wrap it in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to 3 days.

When ready to make the pie, let the dough rest for 5 minutes at room temperature. Lay out a piece of parchment paper and dust it with flour. Using a floured rolling pin, roll the pie dough out into a 12 inch circle or until it fits into the pie dish with enough for the sides. Add more flour when needed to prevent sticking.

Carefully transfer the pie crust to a greased pie dish by flipping the parchment paper over the dish and then carefully peeling it off. Gently press the dough into the dish and crimp any extra dough on the sides.

Add the sliced apples to a large mixing bowl. Mix in the sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla until the apples are completely coated.

Pour the apples into the unbaked crust.

In a medium sized bowl, add the flour, walnuts, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix them together and then add the melted butter. Mix until everything is well combined and forms a crumble.

Then, add the crumb topping to the top of the apples.

Place the pie pan on a baking sheet and bake in the oven at 425°F for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350°F and bake for an additional 60-75 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown. Check the pie occasionally to be sure the crust is not getting too brown. If it is, cover the edges with foil.

Let the pie cool completely at room temperature before serving. This will take about 3-4 hours. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and enjoy!

Storing leftovers

Leftover apple pie crumble should be placed in an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. If storing in the freezer, enjoy within one month.

Recipe Tips

What is the difference between apple pie and crumble?

The main difference between an apple pie and an apple crumble comes down to the filling and the top layer! Apple pie includes a filling with a layer of dough on top, whereas a crumble has a crunchy, crumbly top layer.

However, this apple pie combines the two with a classic apple filling and a crunchy crumble topping.

What is the crumble on top of apple pie made of?

The crumble on top of this apple crumble pie is made with flour, walnuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

What is the secret to good crumble?

The secret to this recipe is first to be sure you’re using cold butter, and second to go generous with the walnuts! The nuts help to make the perfect crumble texture, so don’t use them sparingly.

Wow, this was one of the BEST apple pies I’ve ever made! I’m the designated pie baker for Thanksgiving, and have made many, many apple pies, but never a crumble apple pie. I brought this to my future in-laws for Thanksgiving and this was a HIT! Not too sweet, the crust was perfect, and the crumble topping was so good. Very easy recipe to follow as well!

I was nervous to try this recipe because pies can be intimidating but the recipe was easy to follow and DELICIOUS! I prefer this over a regular apple pie. My entire family loved it.

This recipe turned out perfectly!! I’m not a big baker to begin with and this was my first apple pie. The dough was easy (truthfully I was scared and intimidated) and the recipe was a breeze to follow. Everyone loved the combo of pie and crumble! I’ll be adding this to my holiday recipe rotation.
