Craving a burger but forgot to grab a pack of burger buns at the store? That’s okay – make your own burger bowl instead! Made with juicy ground beef, crispy lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and homemade special sauce, this burger bowl recipe is a delicious and healthier alternative to a traditional burger.

Crafting The Perfect Burger Bowl!
I can’t be the only one who’s been to the grocery store and walked out with 10 things… but NOT the one thing you walked in for. In this case, I totally forgot the burger buns! But that’s okay because I’m going to show you how to make the perfect burger bowl – no buns required!
Instead of eating a plain burger patty on a plate, why not transform it into a delicious and satisfying meal by adding some fresh ingredients and topping it off with a homemade special sauce?
This burger bowl recipe is easy to make and is a healthier alternative to the traditional burger.
Plus, you won’t have to worry about missing out on any of the delicious flavors!
So, let’s get started with crafting the perfect burger bowl.

Ingredients needed
This burger bowl recipe can be broken down into three main components: the meat, burger toppings, and the special sauce.
Here’s a quick breakdown of everything you’ll need!
Bowl:
- Ground Beef: Whenever I make burgers, I like to use a combination of lean ground beef and 80% lean ground beef. This keeps the burger juicy but also prevents it from becoming too greasy.
- Lettuce: For this burger bowl recipe, I recommend using romaine lettuce for its crispiness. However, you can use any type of lettuce that you prefer. Spinach or mixed greens also make for great options!
- Tomatoes: Fresh tomatoes are always best for burgers! Dice up some juicy cherry tomatoes or slice up some Roma tomatoes to add to your burger bowl.
- Cheese: You can’t have a burger without cheese! For this recipe, I recommend using cheddar or Swiss cheese. But any type of cheese that melts well would work great.
- Yellow Onion: Sautéed onions add a nice sweetness to the burger bowl. You can also use red onions for a stronger flavor.
- Pickles: A good pickle can make or break a burger bowl. They add a nice tangy crunch to each bite. Bread and Butter pickles or dill pickles work great in this recipe.
- Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potato fries are a great alternative to regular french fries. They add a touch of sweetness and pair well with the ground beef.
Special Sauce:
- Mayonnaise: One of the main ingredients for the special sauce is mayonnaise. You can use regular or light mayo, whichever you prefer. Avocado mayo is also a great option!
- Ketchup: The second key ingredient in the special sauce is ketchup. This adds a tangy and slightly sweet flavor to the sauce.
- Mustard: A spoonful of mustard will give the special sauce a sharp and tangy taste. Dijon, honey mustard, or spicy mustard also work well.
- Worcestershire sauce: This adds a bit of depth and umami flavor to the sauce.
- Pickle juice: The final touch to the special sauce is pickle juice, which adds a nice tangy kick and brings all the flavors together.
- Spices: To give the special sauce a little extra flavor, you can add in some spices like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or cayenne pepper.

Kitchen tools required
Here’s a bit more information about what I used to make these homemade burger bowls…

- Small Bowl
- Whisk
For measuring, you will need a cup, 1/3 cup, a tablespoon, a teaspoon, and a 1/4 teaspoon.
How to make burger bowls with special sauce
Making your own burger bowl is actually really easy!
Start by heating your oven to 425 degrees and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut sweet potatoes into strips, toss them in olive oil, and spread them on the sheet. Bake for 40 minutes, giving them a quick toss every few minutes.
Heat a pan over medium-high, add some olive oil, and sauté the diced onion until soft. Then add the ground beef, breaking it apart, and cook until it’s no longer pink.
Divide lettuce into three bowls. Add beef and onions, then tomatoes, pickles, and cheese evenly.
Mix the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
Top each bowl with sweet potatoes, drizzle with sauce, and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
Below are some common burger bowl questions. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post!
Can I use turkey or plant-based meat instead?
Absolutely! Burger bowls are versatile, so feel free to swap the traditional beef for turkey, chicken, or even plant-based meat.
What are some other sauces I can use?
If you’re not a fan of the special sauce, you can substitute it with your favorite burger condiment or dressing.
Try my healthy BBQ sauce or vegan buffalo sauce for a twist on traditional flavors!
What other toppings can I add to my burger bowl?
The possibilities are endless! Some other delicious toppings to add to your burger bowl could be:
- Avocado
- Bacon
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Fried egg
Get creative and make it your own!
Can I meal prep burger bowls?
Yes, you can meal prep components of the burger bowl ahead of time for a quick and easy lunch or dinner option. Cook the beef, chop the veggies, and prepare the sauce beforehand.
When it’s time to eat, simply assemble all the ingredients in a bowl.
What can I substitute the sweet potatoes with?
If sweet potato fries are not your thing, try regular potatoes, parsnips, or even zucchini for a healthier alternative to fries.

Storing leftovers
If you have leftovers, the trick is to stash them in different containers! Add the beef and sweet potatoes in their own containers, away from fresh produce (lettuce and tomatoes) and sauce, to avoid sogginess.
When it’s time to reheat, just pop the meat and potatoes in the microwave or oven to keep things crispy and tasty, and then assemble your burger bowl!
