black bean burgers

The best black bean burgers ever

Roll up your sleeves and get cooking with these delicious black bean burgers, your new favorite meatless Monday burger option!

These burgers feature all-vegan ingredients and are made using something special: rolled oats. It’s a yummy blend of oats, black beans, veggies, and seasonings that tastes so great atop your favorite buns, fixings loaded on top.

A great part about this recipe is that it stores well in both the fridge and freezer, making it great for prepping ahead of time.

Ingredients in black bean burgers

What separates these from your average black bean burgers are the flavorings — I mean when was the last time you used soy sauce and balsamic vinegar to make a burger?! Here’s a quick rundown on the ingredients that make these burgers so tasty.

  • Rolled oats: First up, you will need 1 cup of rolled oats.
  • Black beans: The bulk of the burgers will be made up of two 15oz cans of black beans, drained and rinsed.
  • Onion: Next, you will need 1/2 of a small yellow onion, cut into big chunks.
  • Green pepper: The same goes for a green pepper. Deseed and chop 1/2 of a pepper into large chunks.
  • Garlic: 3 cloves of garlic will add delicious flavors to the burgers.
  • Soy sauce: Next, up include 2 tbsp of soy sauce. This adds a really subtle but delicious tanginess.
  • Balsamic vinegar: The same goes for the balsamic vinegar — use 2 tbsp.
  • Seasonings: Next, include 1 tsp each of cumin, chili powder, and salt.
  • Pepper: Finalize the spices with 1/2 tsp of black pepper.
  • Avocado oil: Last but not least, you will need 2 tbsp of avocado oil to cook the patties.

Tools used to make this vegan black bean burger recipe

You’ll need six main tools to create vegan burgers, starting with a chopping board and knife to cut the veggies! Then, gather a food processor, mixing bowl, stirring utensil, and sauté pan and you’re ready for action.

  • Cutting board
  • Chopping knife
  • Food processor
  • Mixing bowl
  • Stirring utensil
  • Pan

For measuring, you will need the following sizes: 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1 tbsp, and 1 cup.

How to make the best black bean veggie burgers

The process of making these burgers begins by blending the burger ingredients in a food processor. Then, simply mix everything together, form into patties, and heat! Here’s a full breakdown:

Blend the oats in a food processor until fine.

Add half of the black beans, onion, pepper, and garlic. Pulse until just combined. Do not pulse too long to avoid a mushy consistency. Around 6 times should be sufficient.

Next, pour the mixture into a bowl. Add the rest of the black beans, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper.

Stir in gently until well combined. Let sit for 10 minutes to thicken.

Form into 6-8 patties.

Heat a pan with 2 tbsp of avocado oil over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side.

Serve immediately.

Delicious black bean burger fixings

Once you’re ready to serve your burgers, do so as you would any other burger! These will taste great atop a nice, fluffy (optionally toasted) bun with lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, mustard, etc. You can also throw on a thick slice of cheese for extra yumminess.

Black bean benefits

Black beans are so good for us in so many ways! Not only are they delicious (especially in burger form), they’re also packed with loads of benefits.

Protein is a big one, with more than 7g per 1/2 cup, but they’re also rich in complex carbs, fiber, potassium, iron, and calcium. Their makeup makes them great for aiding blood pressure, heart health, digestion, and even bone health.

Storing leftovers

Want to store pre-cooked burgers for later? This is a great option because you’ll have heat-and-go patties at your fingertips when needed!

Before storing, let the patties cool. Then, place them in an airtight container and store in either the fridge or freezer.

In the fridge, they’ll stay good for up to 3-4 days. In the freezer, about 2-3 months.

If you liked this recipe, you’ll want to try these!

I made these tonight and they are so yummy. Much better than any store bought veggie burgers I’ve tried…the flavor is so good! The key is to not over blend in the food processor to keep that great texture. I’m excited to use the leftovers for lunches this week! Thanks Erin!

So I’ve never been a huge black bean burger fan, because the ones I’ve tried have been pretty bland. That is not the case for this recipe! It’s so flavorful and simple to make. Highly recommend!!

    Hi Erin,

I read through the comments and couldn’t find anyone who had tried these on the BBQ. This would be my preferred choice for cooking but not sure if they will stand up to that. Have you tried BBQing them?

    Thanks!

I personally struggled to make these because my food processor was way too small. I had to process in batches which I’m sure affected the texture! But that’s on me, not the recipe. Flavor was really nice! I would do smaller cuts of the onion and green pepper though.

I’ve made these burgers probably 3 or 4 times now; it’s become my go-to recipe! It is SO much easier than a lot of veggie burger recipes I’ve used in the past – love that you pretty much just throw everything into the food processor. The patties also hold together so well, and I love the taste they get from the soy sauce/balsamic combo.

I convinced my husband to make these for us while I was recovering from surgery and we both loved them! He doesn’t love to cook usually and was hesitant about trying black bean burgers but the recipe was easy to follow and turned out great! We just made a double batch this week to try freezing half for an easy meal on busier nights.

I definitely overmixed/processed/chopped/whatever the filling here, so the texture was a little mushier than intended, but the taste was still great. Not sure I’d know the difference if someone didn’t tell me it wasn’t meat. Loved it, and I hate most veggie burgers. Can’t wait to make again with less enthusiasm behind the chopping!!
