Get ready for your new favorite appetizer

Sometimes, you need a taco-esque dish, but plain ol’ tacos won’t cut it! That’s where taco dip comes in. Oh, yeah. This hot taco dip recipe puts a spin on everyone’s favorite meal with multiple flavorful layers and loads of classic taco ingredients!

This dip uses a ground turkey base and brings all of the delicious flavors to the table with the addition of onion, garlic, black beans, tomatoes, Greek yogurt, green onion, and cheddar cheese. The taste is made complete with the addition of a pack of your favorite taco seasoning!

This is the perfect recipe to serve with salty tortilla chips and it works as a great appetizer or snack. Serve it up to friends and family for all of the compliments to the chef (aka you!).

Ingredients in hot taco dip with ground turkey

This warm taco dip recipe is made by combining classic taco toppings and ingredients like onion, black beans, diced tomatoes, and cheddar cheese. The result is a layered dip that’s so good that you’ll be tempted to make it weekly.

  • Onion: First up is a yellow onion! You will need about 1/2 of it, diced into small pieces.
  • Avocado oil: 2 tbsp of avocado oil will be used to sauté the onions and cook the ground turkey.
  • Ground turkey: And as for the turkey, you will need 1 lb. I recommend a 93/7 blend for the best results!
  • Garlic: Add some flavor by including 2 cloves of minced garlic. If you only have powder, use 1/2 tsp.
  • Taco seasoning: Next, add delicious taco flavor by using one 1.3 oz pack of taco seasoning.
  • Black beans: Include black beans in the amount of one can, drained and rinsed.
  • Diced tomatoes: Add yummy tomato flavor with 1 can of drained diced tomatoes.
  • Greek yogurt: Next, use 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt. This will thicken up the dip and create a delicious flavor. This also serves as a healthy substitute for cream cheese or sour cream!
  • Green onion: 1/2 cup of chopped green onion will be placed under and over a layer of cheese!
  • Cheddar cheese: Finally, use 1 cup of your favorite shredded cheddar cheese.

Tools used to make this hot taco dip recipe

To make this hot taco dip recipe, you will need a handful of kitchen tools including a baking dish. I recommend a 6×10 inch baking dish or something similar. For baked dips, smaller dishes are always best. A 9×13 dish will be too big, so try to go with something smaller. In addition to the baking dish, you will need:

  • Cutting board
  • Chopping knife
  • Large sauté pan
  • Spatula
  • 2 large mixing bowls
  • Stirring utensil

For measuring out ingredients, you will need 1 tbsp, 1/2 cup, and 1 cup.

How to make taco dip

The prep for homemade taco dip begins with sautéing some onions and browning the turkey. From there, we’ll mix together a bunch of the flavorings before assembling everything in a dish and baking!

Begin by preheating the oven to 350°F.

Next, heat the avocado oil in a large sauté pan. Once hot, add the onion and cook for 2 minutes.

Add the ground turkey and cook until it’s no longer pink.

Then, add the garlic and half of the taco seasoning. Stir to combine everything, and then turn off the heat. Pour the meat into the casserole dish.

In a bowl, mix together the beans, diced tomatoes, and half of what is left of the taco seasoning (meaning 1/4 of the original packet).

Pour the bean mixture on top of the turkey.

In another bowl, mix together the yogurt and the remaining 1/4 of the taco seasoning. Spread this on top of the bean mixture in the casserole dish.

Sprinkle half of the chopped green onion on top, and then layer on all of the cheese. Finish off the assembly by topping the dish with the remaining green onion.

Bake for 20 minutes, and let cool slightly before serving.

Like things a bit spicy?

Take your hot taco dip up a notch by adding some heat! You have a couple of options here.

One option for adding heat is to use a few teaspoons of red pepper flakes.

If you want to go even hotter, dice up a couple of jalapeños and throw them in at step 5! Remember, the heat comes from the seeds. If you want some jalapeño flavor but not too much heat, remove some of the seeds!

Optional ingredient additions

When it comes to taco dip, I’m a firm believer that the more layers, the better! If you want to add to your recipe, here are a few ingredients you can try:

  • Jalapeños (as mentioned above)
  • Black olives
  • Diced red pepper
  • Red onion (to use in place of yellow for a more potent onion flavor)
  • Shredded lettuce (as a top layer)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 large yellow onion
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1 lb ground turkey (93/7 blend preferred)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1.3 oz pack taco seasoning
  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onion
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. In a large sauté pan, heat avocado oil. Once hot, add in onion and cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Add in ground turkey and cook until no longer pink.
  4. Add in garlic and half of the taco seasoning. Mix. Turn off heat. Pour meat into casserole dish. I used a 6×10 dish. It will need to be a smaller dish for baked dips, as a 9×13 will be too big.
  5. In a bowl, mix together the beans, diced tomatoes, and HALF of what’s left of the taco seasoning.
  6. Pour the bean mixture on top of the turkey.
  7. In another bowl, mix together yogurt and the other HALF of the taco seasoning. Spread this on top of the bean mixture in the casserole dish.
  8. Sprinkle half the chopped green onion on top, then layer all of the cheese. Top with remaining green onion and bake for 20 minutes.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.
