Easy Watermelon Margarita

An easy watermelon margarita recipe that can be served frozen or on the rocks! This skinny margarita is made with fresh fruit and is perfect to make for a crowd!

two easy watermelon margaritas

All summer long you can find me sipping on an easy watermelon margarita. Actually, you can find me sipping on any margarita because I’ve never met a margarita I didn’t like.

These ones may just be my favorite easy margarita recipe because all you have to do is throw everything into a blender and serve over a glass with a salt rim.

Plus these are made from real and simple wholesome ingredients with no added sugar so you can count on the fact that you won’t have a headache if you end up drinking a few too many.

Fresh watermelon margaritas are meant to be drank in the summer, and these can be served on the rocks or blended into a frozen drink like pictured on this blog.

If you are a big margarita fan like me, you should also make my Classic Skinny Margarita too. It is another one of my favorites.

bottle of cointreau next to glasses

Ingredients in watermelon margarita

The ingredients in this easy watermelon margarita are simple. With the star of the show being the tequila, lime and watermelon combination, along with a salted rim, you can’t go wrong.

Tequila – I recommend a white tequila, something like Espolon or Casamigos – those are both two of my favorites.

Watermelon – since it’s summer, we need fresh juicy watermelon for this recipe! The watermelon acts as the only sweetener here, so the redder you can get it, the better!

Triple Sec – we used Cointreau but you can use any variety or orange flavored liquor. This is key to getting that classic margarita flavor. You can also omit the triple sec if you don’t have any.

Lime juice + limes – fresh squeezed limes and some to cut for wedges, please!

Honey – adds just the right sweetness! Agave is a great substitute.

Ice – for blending up nice and smooth or for serving on the rocks.

Salt – no margarita is complete without a salted rim. I buy margarita salt at the regular grocery store.

How to make an easy watermelon margarita

There are two ways you can serve these margaritas: frozen and on the rocks.

Frozen – this is my personal favorite way to serve these margaritas because when the summer sun hits, all I can think about is making myself and my friends a nice frozen margarita.

First, you’ll want to cut up your watermelon and freeze it for at least six hours or until it’s completely frozen. The watermelon will partially act like ice and make this drink even thicker than if you just used fresh watermelon.

Next, you’ll add all ingredients to a high-speed blender like a Vitamix. Blend, blend, blend until completely smooth. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides a few times and if you have a Vitamix, use the toggle to get things moving.

Fresh – repeat the same steps above, except leave out the ice and do NOT freeze the watermelon ahead of time. You want to blend fresh watermelon with tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. Then serve over ice.

How to salt a rim for margaritas

The trick to salting a rim for a margarita is simple! All you need to do is pour some margarita salt on a plate, or if you bought it in a specific margarita salt tub it should already be in the right shape.

Cut a lime into wedges and rub the wet part against the rim of the glass in a circular motion. Then dip the cup upside down onto the salt and press down, moving slowly to ensure all sides are covered.

That’s it!

I hope you enjoy these delicious easy watermelon margarita recipe as much as I did!

I like to pair this recipe with my eggplant caviar dip, buffalo chicken dip, or thai peanut hummus.

Print Pin it Rate

Ingredients

  • 4 cups frozen watermelon (keep fresh if serving on the rocks)
  • 1/2 cup tequila -I prefer white, Espolon or Casamigos
  • 1/4 cup triple sec – I used Cointreau
  • 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1–2 tbsp honey depending on desired sweetness
  • 1 heaping cup ice
  • salt for rim
  • limes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cut up your watermelon and freeze it on a baking sheet for at least six hours. If you are making margaritas on the rocks, skip the freezing step.
  2. Add watermelon, tequila, triple sec, lime juice, honey and ice to a blender. Leave out ice if making on the rocks.
  3. Blend until completely smooth.
  4. Pour into salted rim glass (steps on how to do this above) and serve with lime.
  5. Enjoy!

I rarely leave comments or ratings for recipes so please take that as a compliment. Best watermelon margarita ever. I have never been able to replicate a high quality restaurant margarita until now. So fresh. I did have some fresh mint from my garden so I threw that in. About ten leaves i let soak for an hour or two in the fridge while it chilled. So refreshing.

WOW!! I didn’t have a recipe for the extra watermelon I froze. I LOVE making drinks and knew I wanted to make margaritas with it. Searched and found your recipe Erin. It is the BEST tasting watermelon margarita! Hands down! Easy with minimal sweetness, I used agave. I will look for more recipes from you! Salute!!

Made these for a party and they were fabulous! I used fresh watermelon in my juicer.

I love them so much! I am wondering if I could supplement the watermelon for other fruit? Thinking apples for the Fall?

This looks great. I assume you are using seedless watermelon? Also when you say 4 cups watermelon I again assume you mean cuped, not fluid ounces?

Hi DJ, yes, you can use a seedless watermelon or just pick out the seeds of a seeded. Yes, four cups of solid watermelon. Let me know how they turn out for you!
