Refresh and cool down with blood orange margaritas

Margaritas are always a good idea. Pomegranate, apple cider, peach, watermelon, or coconut margarita, anyone? How about a skinny spin on the classic?!

Or, for something completely different, how about this blood orange number? This delicious blood orange margarita is made with everything you’d expect to find in a marg: tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and simple syrup. But to take the flavor profile up a notch, we’re adding freshly squeezed blood orange juice!

The result is a sweet, tart, and incredibly refreshing beverage that you’re sure to love.

Ingredients in this blood orange margarita recipe

This recipe uses a blend of flavorful ingredients that together create the most delicious orange drink! Below is everything you’ll need:

  • Tequila: This recipe kicks off with 4oz of tequila! For best results, use blanco. If you don’t have silver tequila handy, gold will be okay.
  • Blood orange juice: Then, add the delicious citrus flavor with 3oz of fresh blood orange juice. (if you don’t have a blood orange handy, you can substitute it with a regular orange or a grapefruit).
  • Lime juice: Follow that with 2oz of fresh lime juice.
  • Cointreau: Add some more orange flavor by including 2oz of Cointreau (or other triple sec or orange liqueur).
  • Simple syrup: Add flavor with 1 oz of simple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Tajin or salt: Grab some tajin or salt (sea salt, margarita salt, or any other thick salt is best) for the rim.
  • Ice: You’ll need about 1 cup of ice to use amongst the shaker and glasses.
  • Decoration: Last but not least, use orange slices and lime slices for a garnish!

Margarita kitchen tools

To make this recipe, you will need a few kitchen tools: a large cocktail shaker, an ounce measuring cup, a small plate, and two margarita or cocktail glasses. We like to keep things simple!

How to make easy blood orange margaritas

Ready to get started? You can expect this orange margarita to be ready to enjoy in under five minutes of prep time and total time.

First, fill a large shaker 1/3 of the way with ice.

Add the tequila, orange juice, lime juice, triple sec, and simple syrup.

Then, shake vigorously.

Rim two glasses with a lime wedge and then dunk in the tajin until evenly coated. Fill the cups with ice.

Evenly divide the margarita and pour through the shaker strainer into the two glasses. Serve with the lime and orange wedges.

Recipe Tips

Can I use orange juice instead of triple sec for margaritas?

Yes and no! While you would still have a flavorful drink, it wouldn’t technically be a margarita. Triple sec is what makes a marg a marg! Without it, the drink is technically orange, lime, and tequila. Of course, if you don’t have any triple sec handy, feel free to use oj!

TL;DR: Yes!

What does blood orange taste like?

Blood oranges tastes similar to a naval orange, but with a slightly sweeter, slightly tart bite!

What is the secret ingredient in margaritas?

That would be the tequila! Or the triple sec. Or the lime… it really comes down to whichever flavor is your favorite! There’s not necessarily one secret ingredient.

These are so yummy. We will definitely be making again! I love margaritas, but usually don’t do flavored since they get too sweet. These were the perfect balance!

I love these SO much. They’ve been my go to all summer long. Blood oranges aren’t quite in season yet so I’ve used Cara Cara oranges instead. Can’t wait to try with blood oranges! I made these for our house warming party and they were a huge hit, every single person liked them, even my boyfriend who is picky and hates anything slightly sweet.

These were amazing!! Since blood oranges are in season by us quite yet, I used Cara Cara Oranges and they were so good in this recipe. Definitely a keeper. Also worked to make a batch of this in a pitcher by doubling the 2x recipe.
