Strawberry margarita mocktail
The sun is out and the temperatures are soaring – time for an ice-cold drink! While a frozen cocktail is a summertime staple, sometimes a non-alcoholic drink is in order.
Queue my strawberry margarita mocktail.
A virgin strawberry margarita is a crowd-favorite, perfect for folks of all ages. It’s quick to make and uses simple ingredients that you may already have on hand like frozen strawberries and fresh lime juice.
The flavor is so sweet and bright, with layers of citrus complimenting the frozen strawberry base.
Whether you’re making a pitcher for your family or serving glasses at a garden party, I have one guarantee – a batch of this strawberry margarita mocktail will be the star of the show!
And while we’re at it, I have a TON of summer drink inspiration ready to serve up. Check out my recipes for strawberry mint ranch water, peach Aperol spritz, and coconut margarita (after you try this recipe, of course).
Ingredients needed
In my opinion, a good mocktail uses minimal ingredients for a tasty and balanced flavor combination.
Here’s a little bit on everything that makes up this strawberry margarita without alcohol:
- Frozen Strawberries: The base of this mocktail is one 16 oz bag of frozen strawberries. Frozen fruit makes the drink nice and icey without watering it down. Plus, the berries give the mocktail a sweet, vibrant flavor that’s perfect for the sunny weather! Feel free to get creative with flavor combinations, adding different frozen fruits like mango, pineapple, or watermelon.
- Limes: For a bright burst of acidity, I use the juice of 2 large limes in this frozen mocktail. You’ll also want a few extra lime wedges for the rim of your glasses and as an optional garnish. You can swap for lemon juice if you prefer, though it won’t have that classic margarita flavor.
- Orange Juice: 1 cup of orange juice keeps the sunny vibes going, giving the drink a more complex, fruity flavor. It also mirrors the flavors of triple sec (an orange liqueur) that is found in most margarita recipes. Swap for pineapple juice if you fancy it!
- Agave Syrup: I add 2 tbsp of agave syrup to this recipe for extra sweetness. If you prefer a more tart drink, you can reduce it to 1 tbsp, or skip this step altogether. Simple syrup works as a substitution, made from just boiled water and white sugar.
- Margarita Salt: The trick to getting that signature margarita flavor is to rim the glasses with a bit of salt. Combined with lime juice, this margarita salt gives the drinks that extra special touch!
Kitchen tools required
Here’s a little more on what you’ll need to make these strawberry mocktails:
- High-speed blender
- Shallow dish
You’ll also need a couple of liquid measuring cups including 1 cup and 1 tbsp.
How to make a strawberry margarita mocktail
This virgin strawberry margarita is super easy to make. Let’s go!
Add frozen strawberries, lime, juice, orange juice, and agave syrup to a large, high-speed blender. Blend on high until your ingredients are completely smooth.
If your frozen mocktail is too thick or is struggling to blend, thin the mixture with a bit of extra orange juice.
Rim your glasses using a lime wedge. Pour margarita salt onto a shallow dish, then dip the glasses in the salt.
Pour your strawberry margarita mocktail into the prepared glasses, add an extra lime wedge on the side, and serve!
Recipe tips
Below are some common strawberry margarita mocktail questions. Don’t see the answer you’re looking for? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post!
Which flavor variations suit this margarita mocktail?
You can pretty much swap frozen strawberries for any of your favorite frozen fruits to make a brand-new flavor combination.
Stick to summer-inspired fruits that would best complement the acidic lime addition. Some ideas include:
- Mango
- Watermelon
- Peach
- Pineapple
- Raspberry
- Coconut
Can I make this recipe alcoholic?
While this recipe is made to be a strawberry margarita without alcohol, you can easily transform it into a cocktail.
To do so, simply add ½ cup of tequila blanco and ¼ cup triple sec to your ingredients, then blend.
Can I use fresh strawberries instead of frozen ones?
If you have fresh strawberries on hand, you can use them in place of the frozen strawberries. This will, however, affect the texture of the mocktail.
I recommend adding a cup of ice to your blender if using fresh strawberries to maintain that frozen, icy texture.
What should I use to garnish my margarita mocktail?
Classic margarita garnishes include a salt rim made from flaky sea salt and a lime wedge. However, these are just suggestions. Changing up your garnishes is a good way to customize this recipe for more flavor and fun!
Try adding sliced strawberries to the side of the glass, swapping your salt rim for a sugar rim (kid-approved!), or garnishing with a fresh sprig of mint.
Storing leftovers
This frozen mocktail should be made immediately before you’re ready to serve it. As it is frozen, it’ll melt quickly and won’t keep its slushy consistency in the fridge or freezer.
If you want to make a margarita mocktail in advance, blend it as normal, then add your strawberry slush to a freezer-safe container or small portions in an ice cube tray. It’ll keep for up to one month.
How do I enjoy this mocktail after freezing?
Once you’re ready to enjoy your frozen margarita, simply reblend it in a high-speed blender.
You may also want to add a little bit of orange juice to help the ingredients blend (just a splash at a time!)
