Easy and delicious chocolate brownie protein balls

When it comes to snacking, having healthy options on hand is key! So, when meal prepping, I like to create batches of easy grab-and-go bites to have on hand. Brownie protein balls are great for this! They taste incredible, and they’re packed with nutrients that kick hunger to the curb.

These energy balls have a great brownie chocolate flavor that are sure to fight even the most intense chocolate craving. They make a smart snack option, but they’re tasty enough that they’re a sweet treat satisfying enough for dessert!

Ingredients in these easy brownie protein balls

This recipe requires only 6 ingredients, some of which are probably already in your pantry!

  • Walnuts: First up for this recipe is 2 cups of walnuts. These are going to add a nice crunch to the brownie balls.
  • Medjool dates: Next, 12 pitted and softened medjool dates add great flavor and texture. To soften the dates, I like to soak them in warm water for about 5 minutes. These are going to add a nice sweet taste to the brownie bites.
  • Protein powder: Next, protein powder is going to amp up the protein and thicken up the batter. You will need 1/4 cup of your favorite type of vanilla powder.
  • Cocoa powder: Create the brownie flavor with 1/3 cup of cocoa powder.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla extract is a must! Use 1 tsp.
  • Salt: Finally, finish off with 1/2 tsp of salt.

Tools used to make this brownie protein ball recipe

To make this recipe, only a few kitchen tools are required. First, you’ll need a food processor or blender to combine the ingredients. A spatula may come in handy if you need to scrape down the sides. From there, you’ll need a plate or baking sheet to set the balls on for chilling. Finally, you’ll need some measuring cups in the following sizes: 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, and 1 cup.

How to make these protein brownie balls

These protein brownie bites are so easy to prepare! They’re made in a single bowl and there is no baking required. You can expect this recipe to require about 15 minutes of prep time (or less!). Just don’t forget to add to the total time to allow the bites to chill.

Begin with a food processor, blending together the walnuts and dates until they’re well combined and form a dough ball.

Then, add the protein powder, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt, and blend again until well combined.

Roll the batter into 20 balls and optionally sprinkle with sea salt. Freeze for an hour or place in the refrigerator for 4 hours before eating.

Storing leftovers

I recommend storing these brownie balls in an airtight container and keeping them in the refrigerator or freezer so that they keep their shape and fresh flavor. Remember to thaw before enjoying!

Recipe Tips

Are protein balls good for you?

These brownie protein balls are a great source of nutrients and vitamins! Not only do they provide protein, they’re also rich in magnesium, fiber, healthy fats, and potassium thanks to the dates and walnuts.

Do I have to use vanilla protein powder?

You can also use chocolate protein powder! The brownie balls will wind up extra chocolatey, but it will work just as well as vanilla. Whey protein powder and other plant-based protein powder options will also work.

Can I substitute out the walnuts?

Yes, other nuts such as peanut, cashews, and almonds will work! I recommend using slivers or chopping them yourself before adding to the recipe. You can also mix in coconut flakes!

Can I add nut butter?

Nut butter will change the texture and make the protein brownies softer, but you’re welcome to add some for extra flavor and protein. Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, or even sunflower seed butter will all work.

Optional ingredient mix-ins

Want to add some more goodies to your brownie protein bites? You can mix in everything from coconut flakes to dark chocolate chips or extra nuts.

Is there something else I could use in place of the walnuts since I don’t have them on hand? Possibly a nut butter?

Hi Kristen, any other nut will work! Probably would be too wet with just a nut butter.

I really like the taste but I had a hard time making the balls, it was really crumbly! Any suggestions for next time?
