Healthy Cookie Dough Balls are a delicious snack and that take only minutes to make. They’re filled with nut butter, sweetened with honey, and use only five ingredients total!

Easy and delicious healthy cookie dough balls

If there’s one thing I know about myself, it’s that I need a snack in between lunch and dinner. If that doesn’t happen, I will become hangry, and no one likes hangry Erin. These healthy cookie dough balls are the perfect solution! They’re filling, fuel me through the remainder of the day, and taste good alone or paired with something else.

They not only satisfy my mid-afternoon hunger craving but also my hankering for something sweet. Win-win! They’re easy to make, use minimal ingredients, and taste just like cookie dough. You’re going to want to make them again and again!

I also have a cake batter version of these that are a must-try!

Ingredients in chocolate chip cookie dough balls

These healthy cookie dough bites are made with a series of ingredients that create a delicious flavor, perfect texture, and nutrient-rich ingredient profile. Here’s everything you’ll need!

  • Oat flour: First up is 1 cup + 2 tbsp of oat flour. This is going to form the base of the cookie dough balls.
  • Nut butter: Next, 1/2 cup of nut butter adds both flavor and protein. I prefer salted peanut butter or cashew butter.
  • Honey: To add a sweet flavor without using granulated sugar, add 3 tbsp of honey.
  • Coconut oil: 1 tbsp of coconut oil will give the cookie dough the correct texture. It should be melted before using in the recipe, and feel free to add more if needed.
  • Vanilla extract: Next up is 1 tsp of vanilla. This ingredient makes all of the difference, so be sure not to skip it!
  • Salt: If your nut butter is made without salt, add a pinch to the batter.
  • Chocolate chips: Last but not least, you will need 1/2 cup of chocolate chips. This is the most important ingredient of all, if I do say so myself! If you prefer dark chocolate chips, feel free to substitute.

Tools used to make these cookie dough treats

To make this no-bake recipe, you’ll only need a few kitchen tools — just a large mixing bowl and a stirring utensil! A cookie scoop is recommended for shaping the balls, but not required. For measuring out ingredients, you will need 1 tsp, 1 tbsp, 1/2 cup, and 1 cup sized measuring cups.

How to make healthy cookie dough balls

These treats are super simple to make, and they make a wonderful make-ahead option for enjoying throughout the week. All you need is one bowl, about five minutes, and some refrigeration time and you’ve got yourself the best little healthy cookie dough balls ever. Here’s how it’s done!

First, mix together all of the ingredients in a bowl until they’re well combined.

If the batter is too wet to roll into balls, allow it to chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Roll the dough into balls and store them in the fridge or freezer. If you store in the freezer, allow them to thaw for a few minutes prior to eating.

Recipe Tips

What if I don’t have oat flour?

If you’re out of oat flour but have rolled oats, you’re in luck! You can make your own oat flour by pulsing rolled oats in a food processor or Vitamix until it becomes a completely fine and flour-like consistency.

Do I have to use peanut butter?

Nope! You can use any nut butter to make this dessert or snack. Cashew butter works well, as does almond butter. You can even use sunflower seed butter if you don’t eat nuts!

How big should I make my cookie dough balls?

I recommend making each bite about 1.5 inches, which will create around 12 total.

Are dough balls healthy?

That depends how you make them! This recipe uses oat flour, nut butter, honey, coconut oil, vanilla, salt, and chocolate chips. The oat flour and nut butter add protein, and the honey, salt, and coconut oil contribute essential nutrients!

Storing leftovers

Healthy cookie dough balls can be stored in the refrigerator or the freezer! I recommend keeping them in the fridge if you plan to snack soon, but the freezer is fine too. Just be sure to let them thaw for a few minutes before enjoying from frozen.

If you liked this recipe, you’ll want to try these!

So many pre-packaged grab and go options are filled with gross ingredients and packed with sugar, so that’s why I always prefer homemade.

I want to be able to control what I’m eating. Though there are tons of brands of snack bars and bites that I absolutely love (RxBars, Emmys Cookies, Larabar), I really prefer to make everything homemade. Here are some more protein-rich snacks that you may love!

Notes

  • Don’t skip the vanilla extract — it makes all the difference! This is one of those ingredients that can easily get overlooked, but it’s essential for that classic cookie dough flavor. It’s in there for a reason!
  • If the dough is too wet to roll, just pop it in the fridge for 30 minutes. The mixture will firm right up and be much easier to roll into balls. No need to add more flour or panic — just be patient!
  • Use salted peanut butter or cashew butter for the best flavor. The salt in the nut butter balances out the sweetness perfectly. If your nut butter doesn’t have salt, just add a pinch to the batter.

I would love to try this cookie dough ball recipe, but have to make a few substitutions. I can’t have coconut oil/anything coconut, but I also can’t have oats/oat flour. I saw that you recommended almond or cassava flour to someone in an earlier comment. Do you have any idea what amount I would need to use in place of the oat flour (would it be a 1 to 1 swap)? Thanks!!

Hi Alysha, thanks for your kind words! Yes, you can definitely use either flour for this recipe. I haven’t tried either, so be sure to check the ratio for whatever flour your decide to use before baking. Let me know how they come out!

Hi! I wanted to make these, but swap in oatmeal for the chocolate chips. Would you recommend any other changes to the recipe, and/or do you have a recommendation of the right proportion of oats to add in? Thanks– these look amazing!

Since oats are drier, I would add in a little more coconut oil, honey and peanut butter. Try out like 1/2 cup oats! This recipe is very forgiving and can be flexible with many ingredients. Too dry, add more liquid. Too wet, add more dry.

Hi. I’ve made these a few times now but mine always come out a little dry and chalky. Should I add more coconut oil? They are very good but want to get the correct level of moist next time.

    Dear Erin,

I have just came across your website and I am loving these recipes! I struggle so hard to find healthier alternatives to candys and deserts, and now I can start venturing around, I see your recipes are very simple and they look delicious!

What I wanted to know is, considering a see a lot of coconut oil in your recipes and I have a very troubled relationship with anything related with coconut, what kind of oil do you think would be able to replace the coconut one in most of these recipes?

    Thank you so much!

Hi Claudia! Thanks for the amazing words. One oil that I love to use in place of coconut oil is avocado oil. Most grocery stores carry it now. You can also really use any oil you want (olive may be too strong..so stay away from that, but I would suggest avocado)
